MULTIPLE CRASHES ON KARA BRIDGE: FRSC URGES MOTORISTS TO AVOID ROUTE AMID ONGOING RESCUE EFFORTS

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, has advised motorists to use alternative routes as rescue and recovery operations continue following multiple crashes at Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Friday, July 24, 2026.
According to the Command, the first crash occurred at about 12:05 a.m. on the outbound carriageway towards Ibadan and involved five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna.
Preliminary findings indicate that the crash was caused by excessive speed and loss of control. Seven adult males were involved in the incident. One person died, another sustained injuries, while five others escaped unhurt.
The Command explained that the body of the deceased remains trapped beneath one of the heavily loaded trucks, making it necessary to deploy heavy-duty recovery equipment before it can be evacuated.
While rescue and recovery efforts were still underway, another crash occurred at about 3:15 a.m. on the inbound carriageway towards Lagos. The lone accident involved a Mazda commercial bus.
Investigations revealed that the crash resulted from brake failure. The driver sustained serious injuries and was rescued by the FRSC emergency response team before being taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for treatment.
The FRSC, in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other emergency responders, is working to remove the crashed vehicles, recover the trapped victim, clear the affected section of the road, and restore the free flow of traffic.
Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat, expressed sympathy to the families of those affected by the crashes and appealed to motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to remain patient, drive cautiously and cooperate with traffic management officials at the scene.
He strongly advised motorists to avoid the Kara–Ojodu Berger corridor where possible until the recovery operation is completed.
Motorists travelling from Lagos towards Ibadan are advised to divert through the Ikorodu–Sagamu route, while those heading into Lagos should consider using the Lekki-Epe Expressway or the Ikorodu–Sagamu Expressway as alternative entry routes.
The Command also urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated trucks and commercial buses, to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound before embarking on any journey, with special attention given to the condition of braking systems.
Drivers were further advised to avoid unnecessary night travel, especially during periods of poor visibility caused by darkness, rain or fog. Where night travel cannot be avoided, motorists should reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, avoid dangerous overtaking, and stop to rest whenever they feel fatigued, noting that poor visibility and driver fatigue remain major contributors to road traffic crashes.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users and pledged to continue working with relevant emergency and traffic management agencies to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
