NAFDAC, POLICE JOIN FORCES TO ENFORCE SACHET ALCOHOL BAN IN OGUN

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Ogun State Police Command have strengthened their collaboration to enforce regulations on the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages across the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement shared on the command’s X handle on Friday.
According to him, the State Coordinator of NAFDAC Ogun Office 1, Akinwale Fagoroye, led a delegation to the command’s headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, where they met with the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni.
Fagoroye said the enforcement exercise, which began in Abeokuta, would be extended to other parts of the state and sustained until full compliance is achieved.
He said the operation includes the removal from circulation of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml (20cl).
He explained that the initiative was aimed at safeguarding public health and reducing the harmful effects of cheap and easily accessible alcoholic drinks, particularly among children and young people.
Fagoroye urged manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers to comply with the regulations and cooperate with NAFDAC officials during enforcement operations.
NAFDAC enforcement teams are carrying out inspections at markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars, warehouses, factories and other locations where regulated products are manufactured, stored or sold.
The agency also has the authority to sanction fake, unregistered, substandard, adulterated, expired or improperly labelled products, as well as facilities operating without the necessary approvals.
Responding, Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni commended NAFDAC for its efforts to protect public health and pledged the command’s continued support and security assistance during lawful enforcement operations.
Ojajuni said the police and NAFDAC would continue to work within their respective mandates to ensure compliance with relevant laws and protect residents from products and activities that could endanger their health and safety.
He added that the police were also enforcing the Liquor Act and other applicable regulations governing the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in Ogun State.
According to him, the enforcement is also aimed at curbing unlawful alcohol distribution and practices that could expose young people to harmful activities.
