NANS COMMENDS TINUBU, UMAHI OVER KANO NORTHERN BYPASS PROJECT

The National Association of Nigerian Students has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for the ongoing construction of the Northern Bypass in Kano State.

The students’ body described the project as a significant intervention in the North-West, noting that its completion would help reduce traffic congestion and improve access to tertiary institutions and communities across the region.

NANS President, Akinteye Afeez, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday, following an inspection of the road project by a delegation of the association.

Afeez said the inspection was part of NANS’ nationwide assessment of federal road projects linking tertiary institutions, aimed at evaluating the quality and progress of infrastructure that directly affects students.

According to him, the Northern Bypass traverses parts of the North-West and provides connections to 10 institutions in the region.

He noted that students travelling through Kano and neighbouring states had often faced difficulties caused by traffic congestion, particularly on major routes linking different states.

Afeez said the completion of the bypass was expected to ease congestion in Kano and make transportation easier for students and other commuters travelling between states.

He said, “We therefore commend President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for the ongoing project.”

The NANS president also commended Umahi for identifying transportation challenges in the region and initiating the project to address them.

He disclosed that the project comprises a 69.4-kilometre dual carriageway, three flyovers and seven bridges, adding that the association was impressed by the quality and pace of construction observed during its inspection.

Afeez further praised the Tinubu administration for its investment in infrastructure and efforts to improve road connectivity across the country.

He said the consideration of access to tertiary institutions in the planning of federal road projects was particularly important to students.

The students’ association also commended the government for compensating farmers whose agricultural lands were acquired for the construction of the bypass.

NANS noted that the payment of compensation was important in mitigating the impact of the project on affected communities and their livelihoods.

The association, however, urged the Federal Government to maintain the current pace of work and ensure the timely completion of the project.

“We therefore call on the government to intensify efforts and ensure that this road project is completed in earnest,” Afeez added.
