NANS, OSPOLY DEMAND PROBE INTO DEATH OF MAN LINKED TO STUDENT CONVENTION

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone, and the management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, have called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Ayeni Ademiju.
Ademiju was initially reported to have been stabbed at the venue of the NANS convention in Osogbo, Osun State, last Saturday, an incident that reportedly resulted in his death.
However, in separate statements issued in Osogbo on Monday, the NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, and OSPOLY management disputed aspects of the initial report.
Adeyemo said information available to his office indicated that the incident leading to Ademiju’s death did not occur within the premises where the convention was held.
He said the convention had been successfully concluded before participants and officials began receiving information about Ademiju’s condition and subsequent death.
“The convention was successfully concluded before information concerning the deceased’s condition and subsequent death began reaching participants and officials who had already left or were leaving the venue,” Adeyemo said.
The NANS coordinator urged the Osun State Police Command to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident and examine all credible leads that could establish what happened.
“We are urging the Osun State Police Command to examine every credible angle, including the deceased’s movements, persons who were with him before his death, any earlier disputes, and any relevant affiliations necessary to establish the truth,” he said.
Meanwhile, OSPOLY management clarified that although Ademiju was admitted into its part-time programme in 2023, he was not a registered student of the institution at the time of his death.
In a statement signed by the institution’s Registrar, Abiodun Oloyede, the management said Ademiju had voluntarily withdrawn from the Polytechnic after his registration records could not be found on its portal.
The statement said he was admitted to the part-time programme in 2023 but did not complete the registration process required to become a fully registered student.
“There was no evidence of registration, which could have enabled him to write his examinations to complete his National Diploma programme in the school. He left the Polytechnic about three years ago,” the institution said.
OSPOLY said it was perturbed by reports on social media describing Ademiju as one of its students.
“We are perturbed to read on social media about his death. He should not be described as our student,” the management stated.
The separate clarifications have raised questions over the circumstances surrounding Ademiju’s death and his alleged connection to the NANS convention, with both NANS and OSPOLY urging authorities to establish the facts through a thorough investigation.
