NANS RAISES ALARM OVER RISING INSECURITY, ROBBERY AT FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ILARO

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun State Joint Campus Council, has raised concerns over what it described as a growing wave of insecurity and robbery targeting students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.
The association said the reported incidents have heightened fear among students and pose a threat to the peaceful academic environment of the institution.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Adimado Ahmed, NANS expressed concern over the increasing cases of robbery, harassment and other security breaches within and around the campus.
According to the statement, the situation has created anxiety among students and could undermine the conducive learning atmosphere for which the institution is known.
The student body called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), other security agencies and the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, to urgently strengthen security measures to safeguard lives and property.
NANS urged the authorities to intensify security patrols, improve surveillance around student hostels and other vulnerable areas, strengthen intelligence gathering and ensure that those responsible for the criminal acts are apprehended and prosecuted.
“We therefore call on the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), other relevant security agencies and the management of the institution to take immediate and decisive steps to address this disturbing situation,” the statement read.
The association also appealed to residents of Ilaro to collaborate with security agencies and the institution in tackling insecurity within the town and its surrounding communities.
It stressed that security is a collective responsibility, urging landlords, community leaders, business owners, students and other stakeholders to report suspicious activities and support efforts aimed at preventing criminal elements from operating in the area.
NANS further advised students to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary late-night movements, promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies and cooperate with security personnel.
The association also encouraged students to make use of the Gateway Shield App to report crimes and security concerns for prompt response by the Ogun State Police Command.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and safety of students, NANS said it would continue engaging relevant stakeholders until lasting measures are put in place to restore security and enable students to pursue their education without fear.
