The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has foiled an attempt to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kurmawa, Kano.

The command said the incident occurred at about noon when a 40-year-old man, identified as Nura Mohammed, allegedly attempted to throw the substance into the facility.

Mohammed, a resident of Janguza Quarters, Kano, was reportedly apprehended by officers of the Armed Squad Unit after they detected the suspicious movement.

The officers acted under the supervision of the Commander of the Armed Squad, CSC Usman M. Sale, thereby preventing the suspected substance from gaining access to the custodial centre.

The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, CC Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, commended the officers for their vigilance, alertness and commitment to maintaining security and discipline in custodial facilities.

He reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for the smuggling of prohibited items into correctional centres and warned members of the public against attempting to introduce illicit substances or other contraband into the facilities.

The command disclosed that the suspect had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.

It reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security across custodial centres and maintaining a safe environment for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
