NEW ANAMBRA CP ASSUMES OFFICE, VOWS TO ENSURE SAFER, SECURE ENVIRONMENT

The new Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has officially assumed duty as the 36th Commissioner of Police of the Anambra State Police Command.
Ama assumed office on Monday, August 10, 2026, following a strategic redeployment approved by the Police Service Commission and Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
His deployment followed the retirement of the former Commissioner of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, who was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police before retiring from the Nigeria Police Force.
A statement issued by the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said Ama previously served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja. He had earlier served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.
The new CP is expected to consolidate existing security gains in the state while strengthening cooperation between the police and other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other stakeholders.
According to the statement, Ama is a highly experienced senior police officer with more than three decades of service in the Nigeria Police Force.
A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Ama holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Jos. He began his policing career as a Cadet Superintendent of Police after undergoing training at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
Throughout his career, he has served in various capacities covering intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.
His previous postings include Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, FCID, Abuja; Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia; and Commanding Officer, No. 11 Police Mobile Force, Calabar.
He also served as Divisional Police Officer in Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji in the Federal Capital Territory; Coordinator of Courses at the Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer, No. 26 Police Mobile Force, Uyo; Divisional Crime Officer, Sango-Otta, Ogun State; and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, among other strategic positions.
The new commissioner has also attended several professional and strategic training programmes within and outside Nigeria, including the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; and the Incident Site Commander’s Course organised by the British High Commission College of Policing.
Other courses undertaken by Ama include Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management, Advanced Detective Course, as well as various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.
The police command said Ama has received recognition for his professional courage and operational effectiveness, including a commendation award for bravery and gallantry after recovering an AK-47 rifle during a gun battle with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, in 2007.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
Upon assuming office, Ama pledged to build on the security achievements recorded in Anambra State and deepen collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
He also assured residents, visitors and businesses across the state of the command’s renewed commitment to protecting lives and property, preventing and combating crime, upholding the rule of law and creating a safe and secure environment.
