NIGERIAN PASTOR IDACHAMA BECOMES FIRST PATIENT TO UNDERGO ROBOTIC SURGERY AT OGUN HOSPITAL

Pastor Alexander Idachama has become the first patient to undergo robotic-assisted surgery at Redeemer’s Health Village Hospital in Redemption City, Ogun State.

The procedure, a radical prostatectomy, was performed recently at the hospital in collaboration with US-based RoboMed Global Inc. The surgical team was led by Prof. Obi Ekwenna-Davis, co-founder of RoboMed Global, alongside local medical specialists, including Dr Ifeanyi.

Idachama said he discovered the hospital through its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Adedamola Dada, and decided to receive treatment there after learning about the facility’s surgical capabilities.

He said he arrived at the hospital in the last week of August and underwent a series of orientation sessions before meeting members of the surgical team, who explained the procedure and the expected recovery process.

Describing the robotic system as world-class, Idachama said undergoing the procedure in Nigeria saved him the cost and inconvenience of travelling abroad for medical treatment.

A radical prostatectomy involves the removal of the prostate gland and surrounding tissues and is commonly performed in the treatment of localised prostate cancer.

Idachama said he was discharged less than 24 hours after the surgery. Although he experienced mild pain afterwards, he said it subsided quickly.

Reflecting on his recovery, the pastor said robotic-assisted surgery provided greater precision and resulted in less pain and a gentler recovery compared with conventional surgical procedures.

He expressed satisfaction with the treatment and said he would recommend the hospital to his friends and family.

The development comes as robotic-assisted surgery continues to gain ground in Nigeria. Redeemer’s Health Village Hospital, in partnership with RoboMed Global, has also carried out a reported 500-kilometre telerobotic surgery, with surgeons at the Ogun facility remotely operating on a patient with a kidney tumour in Abuja.

Idachama holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and is a researcher specialising in electronics, electrical communication and smart-grid applications. He also serves as a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, which owns and operates Redeemer’s Health Village.
