NRC, NSCDC FOIL RAILWAY VANDALISM ATTEMPT, RECOVER NINE GAS CYLINDERS IN OSUN

The Nigerian Railway Corporation, in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, has thwarted an attempt to vandalise railway track materials at the siding serving the Dangote Steel Rolling Mills in Osogbo, Osun State.
Nine oxygen gas cylinders allegedly brought to the location for the vandalism were recovered during the operation.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the NRC Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the corporation said its Principal Track Officer in Osogbo received information on Friday, August 28, about the ongoing vandalisation of railway materials.
According to the statement, the officer immediately mobilised to the location alongside security personnel.
“On sighting the security operatives, the suspected vandals fled the scene,” the statement said.
A subsequent search of the area led to the discovery of nine oxygen gas cylinders reportedly brought to facilitate the illegal operation.
The NRC said officers of the NSCDC Railway Command and other security personnel have since secured the affected railway materials and the surrounding area.
Reacting to the incident, the NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, described the intervention as another major achievement in the corporation’s ongoing efforts to safeguard railway infrastructure from vandals and economic saboteurs.
Opeifa praised the security personnel for their alertness and swift response, while calling on security agencies operating along the railway network to strengthen surveillance and enforcement against the theft and destruction of railway assets.
He emphasised that railway infrastructure remains a critical national asset, stressing that its protection is vital to the safety of train operations, continuity of services and the country’s economic growth.
The NRC boss also urged residents, particularly communities situated along railway corridors, to assist security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements and activities around railway tracks, stations and other railway facilities.
He further instructed security operatives to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those behind the attempted vandalisation at the Dangote Steel Rolling Mills siding.
Opeifa assured that the NRC would continue to work closely with security agencies to combat vandalism and other activities capable of disrupting railway operations nationwide.
