A nurse identified as Taiwo Godwin Ayodeji has died following an asthma attack at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, amid allegations of medical negligence.
Ayodeji, a post-basic nursing student at the hospital’s School of Nursing, was reportedly a known asthma patient.
According to an eyewitness, the deceased developed breathing difficulties while playing football and was subsequently rushed to the hospital’s emergency unit.
The eyewitness disclosed that Ayodeji was still able to walk into the facility upon arrival, accompanied by a friend.
However, the source alleged that although the nurse was placed on oxygen equipment, the oxygen supply was not switched on.
“I noticed he was on oxygen, but the oxygen was not put on,” the source reportedly said.
The eyewitness further alleged that by the time the medical team attended to Ayodeji, his condition had deteriorated significantly, with a weak pulse and dilated pupils.
Efforts to secure his airway were reportedly unsuccessful before he was eventually pronounced dead.
The incident has raised concerns among colleagues and students, particularly following allegations that Ayodeji’s death was the second involving a nurse from the same school at the facility this year.
Reacting to the incident, the management of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, confirmed Ayodeji’s death and announced that an investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Ajibola Joseph Oluwatoyin Abiola, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director, the management expressed sadness over the death.
The statement said the hospital was deeply saddened by the untimely death of Ayodeji while he was receiving care at its General Medical Practice Unit (GMPU).
“The management extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues, fellow students, and the entire nursing community over this painful loss,” the statement read.
The hospital assured students, staff and members of the public that the investigation would be thorough, impartial and transparent.
It also urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course.
“We remain committed to patient safety, professional accountability and the highest standards of care,” the statement added.
