The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) traditional khaki uniform with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting local production.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
According to the minister, the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to boost indigenous industries by ensuring public spending supports locally made products.
Olawande explained that the new uniforms would be produced entirely in Nigeria, noting that Adire is already manufactured in states such as Ogun and Kwara.
“It’s Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, and we have a textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” he said.
He added that the policy is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s textile industry, create jobs and promote local craftsmanship through increased government patronage.
The minister also revealed that the Federal Government is reviewing the NYSC deployment process to ensure corps members are posted in line with their academic qualifications and professional skills.
