Peter Obi, the presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has leveled accusations against President Bola Tinubu for the systematic neglect of Imo State, asserting that the head of state has failed to spend a single night within the state since assuming office, even while he has been abroad for over 260 days.
On Saturday, October 31, 2026, during a town hall meeting convened in Owerri, Imo State, Obi voiced this allegation as he continued his extensive nationwide outreach to Nigerians in the lead–up to the 2027 general elections.
In a statement posted on his X handle on Sunday, Obi said he had earlier visited a market in Owerri, where he interacted with traders, buyers and other residents about their economic challenges.
According to him, these accounts illustrate the profound hardships ordinary Nigerians endure as a direct consequence of the Tinubu administration‘s economic policies.
During a town hall meeting, the former Governor of Anambra State lambasted the Federal Government, decrying a surge in national debt that has failed to translate into any tangible enhancement of the populace‘s standard of living.
He further highlighted pressing issues such as poverty, hunger, insecurity, and the plight of children denied access to education, asserting that over 140 million Nigerians endure multidimensional poverty, while roughly 18 million children remain excluded from formal schooling.
Obi further characterized Nigeria as among the most terrorized nations globally, contending that the country is grappling with a convergence of severe economic and security challenges.
Addressing the nation with a message of reassurance, the NDC contender affirmed his and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s, steadfast commitment to fortifying and unifying the country in the face of its current challenges.
Furthermore, he committed to substantial capital injections into pivotal industries, notably healthcare and education, alongside the formulation of strategic policies designed to eradicate poverty among millions of Nigerians.
Obi asserted that the pair holds the requisite experience, competence, capacity, and dedication to confront the nation‘s challenges.
During the interactive session, he said participants also raised questions about the protection of their votes in the 2027 elections.
He urged voters to turn out in large numbers, exercise their democratic rights and remain at their polling units until the final results were declared.
Obi expressed appreciation to his supporters, party candidates, members and organisers, as well as residents of Imo State, for their reception and support.
He described the task of building a new Nigeria as a collective responsibility, expressing optimism that the country could work for all its citizens.
