OLUBADAN OLAKULEHIN TO BE LAID TO REST AUGUST 8 AS FAMILY UNVEILS BURIAL PROGRAMME
The Olakulehin Royal Family on Tuesday announced the official funeral rites and farewell activities for the late 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the age of 90 after a brief illness.
According to a statement signed by the monarch’s first son, Olasunmbo Olakulehin, a state burial has been scheduled for Friday, August 8, 2025, with the approval of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde. The funeral service and interment will take place at Cathedral of Saint Peters, Aremo, Ibadan, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
A series of events will precede the burial, beginning with rescheduled sporting tournaments initially planned for the late king’s 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary.
On Sunday, August 3, the semi-final matches of the Olubadan Olakulehin Football Cup will hold at Bishop Philips Academy Stadium at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
This will be followed by the Olakulehin Table Tennis Tournament preliminaries at the Indoor Hall of Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, on Monday, August 4, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Tuesday, August 5, will feature the football third-place match at 2:00 p.m. and the final match at 4:00 p.m., both at the Olubadan Stadium.
The Table Tennis Tournament Finals will conclude the sporting activities on Wednesday, August 6, also at Adamasingba.
On Thursday, August 7, the monarch’s body will lie in state at Mapo Hall during an interfaith service at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Christian wake at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, at 3:00 p.m.
A family thanksgiving service will be held at the Cathedral of Saint Peters, Aremo, on Sunday, August 10, to wrap up the rites.
The Olakulehin family expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Makinde, the Olubadan-in-Council, traditional rulers, religious leaders, dignitaries, and the people of Ibadan and beyond for their condolences and support during the mourning period.
