The Delta State Police Command has arrested a woman and her accomplices for allegedly faking her own kidnapping to extort a N3 million ransom, which she used to finance her wedding expenses.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrests on Monday in Asaba, revealing that the incident was initially reported as a genuine abduction on July 21, 2025, in the Ajaji (Bonsaac) Layout of the state capital.

Following the report, Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, ordered the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squad, led by SP Godwin Osadolor, to ensure the victim’s safe rescue.

Acting swiftly, operatives launched a coordinated intelligence operation that led to the arrest of Alfred Elisha at Koka Roundabout and Ugochukwu Adim off DLA Road, Asaba, on July 22.

During interrogation, Elisha confessed that the abduction was staged in collaboration with the supposed victim, Merit Eleh, aged 29. She was later apprehended and admitted to orchestrating her own kidnapping to raise funds.

Eleh revealed that she had borrowed N3.6 million from her brother to cover costs for her bridal shower and hotel accommodation during her March 2025 wedding. To repay the loan, she faked her abduction, collected N3 million in ransom, gave her accomplices N500,000, and kept N2.5 million for herself.

“All suspects involved in the fake kidnapping have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing,” Edafe stated.
