ONE KILLED AS TRUCK SUFFERS BRAKE FAILURE ON LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY

A physically challenged beggar lost his life on Saturday after a multiple-vehicle crash at Car Park C along the outbound section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Head of Media, Babatunde Akinbiyi.
According to Akinbiyi, the accident involved a container-laden Mack truck with registration number AGL 374 XX, a loaded DAF truck with registration number AKM 476 XB, and a white Toyota bus bearing registration number AKD 137 YA.

Preliminary findings and eyewitness accounts indicated that the Mack truck suffered brake failure while approaching a turning point, causing it to ram into vehicles attempting to negotiate the bend.
The out-of-control truck also struck a physically challenged beggar in a wheelchair, killing him instantly.
“According to eyewitness accounts, the Mack truck had a brake failure and rammed into vehicles negotiating the turning point, before hitting a beggar in a wheelchair, fatally injuring him,” Akinbiyi said.
He noted that the crash caused severe traffic congestion along the outbound Lagos route, with officials of TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police deployed to the scene to manage the situation and clear the obstruction.
Akinbiyi added that efforts were ongoing to evacuate the damaged vehicles and restore the free flow of traffic.
The latest incident comes barely a day after multiple crashes on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway left motorists stranded in heavy traffic.
In that incident, one person was killed while two others sustained injuries, according to the FRSC. The crashes occurred on both the inbound and outbound carriageways of the expressway.
