OSUN POLICE ARREST OFFICER OVER ACCIDENTAL TEAR GAS DISCHARGE AT MODAKEKE

The Osun State Police Command has arrested a police officer deployed to the Registration Area Centre in Modakeke Ward 10, Ife East Local Government Area, following the accidental discharge of tear gas that caused panic during Saturday’s governorship election.

The incident, which occurred at the Registration Area Centre, triggered confusion among residents and election observers, with videos circulating on social media showing angry onlookers confronting police officers.

However, the command dismissed claims that its personnel deliberately fired tear gas at voters to disrupt the election.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the command explained that the incident was caused by the negligence of an officer who was attempting to ease himself.

“The Command wishes to clarify that the incident did not take place at any polling unit. It occurred at the Registration Area Centre (RAC) and was the result of negligence on the part of an officer who was attempting to ease himself,” the statement said.

The command described the officer’s conduct as highly condemnable and said he had been immediately taken into custody, while disciplinary proceedings had commenced.

It added that an investigation was underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether any other motives were involved.

The police further clarified that security personnel deployed to polling units are prohibited from carrying arms or tactical gear within the designated radius of voting points.

The command apologised to residents and election observers affected by the incident and assured the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and security throughout the voting and collation processes.

It also vowed that the officer would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
