Residents of Sogunro community in Lagos State have been thrown into fear following an alleged invasion by armed youths from neighbouring Iwaya community, which reportedly left five people dead and eight others injured.
The Coalition Against Demolition, Forced Eviction, Landgrabbing and Displacement in Lagos State raised the alarm in a statement on Friday, calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack.
The coalition alleged that the incident occurred around midnight between November 1 and 2 after some youths from Iwaya reportedly invaded Sogunro over residents’ refusal to contribute money towards a party.
According to the group, the attackers stormed the community armed with guns, axes and other dangerous weapons, killing at least five people and injuring eight others who required medical attention.
It further alleged that the assailants used different methods to kill their victims, including shooting and hacking them with axes.
One of the victims was reportedly struck on the neck with an axe, while at least one of the bodies was allegedly thrown into a canal.
The coalition also accused the attackers of vandalising and looting valuable properties during the invasion.
Expressing concern over the incident, the group criticised the alleged failure to arrest those responsible, despite the reported loss of lives and extensive destruction.
It said the attack had heightened tension and fear among residents, forcing some people living around the boundary between the two communities to flee their homes.
According to the coalition, some of those displaced have sought refuge in boats and the homes of neighbours along the waterfront to escape possible further attacks.
The group urged the police to immediately investigate the incident, arrest those involved and ensure they are prosecuted.
It also called for increased security presence in the affected communities to prevent further violence and restore confidence among residents.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Lagos State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report, as the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, had yet to respond to a message sent to her.
