PDP BACKS ADELEKE FOR OSUN GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION AFTER COURT RULING

The Peoples Democratic Party has directed its members and supporters in Osun State to support the candidature of Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party in Saturday’s governorship election.
The decision followed a judgment by the Court of Appeal in Abuja which upheld the nomination of Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola as the PDP governorship candidate for the election and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to include the party’s logo on the ballot.
In a statement, the PDP said its lawyers informed the party that the appellate court upheld the nomination submitted by the Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the party.
The court reportedly held that the PDP had conducted its governorship primary, which was monitored by INEC, and duly forwarded the winner’s name to the commission.
It further ruled that the access code required for uploading the candidate’s details on the INEC portal was an administrative requirement and could not override the statutory provision requiring a political party to submit the name of its candidate.
However, despite the judgment, the PDP said the timing had made it practically difficult for its candidate to campaign ahead of Saturday’s election.
The party consequently announced its decision to support Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the Accord Party platform.
According to the statement, Adeleke, a former PDP member, left the party following what it described as a “state-engineered and funded leadership conflict.”
The PDP’s Interim National Working Committee said the decision to back Adeleke followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and was aimed at strengthening opposition participation and defending multi-party democracy.
It urged PDP members across Osun State to vote for Adeleke, protect their votes and ensure that their ballots count.
The party also accused INEC of bias in the handling of its nomination, alleging that the commission had refused to recognise its candidate despite monitoring the primary election.
The PDP said the development had denied its candidate sufficient time to campaign and described the situation as avoidable.
It further called on Nigerians to resist attempts to manipulate elections, insisting that electoral outcomes must reflect the wishes of voters freely expressed through the ballot.
