PETER OKOYE SAYS NIGERIAN LANGUAGES OFFER NO BENEFITS

Afrobeats star and former P-Square member, Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has stirred controversy after suggesting that Nigeria’s indigenous languages offer little practical value.
The singer made the remark after a fan questioned whether his children, whom he had praised for speaking French fluently, could also speak Igbo.
Currently on vacation in Paris, France, Okoye shared on X that watching his children converse effortlessly in French had inspired him to consider buying a home in the city.
“Still in Paris! Watching my kids speak French so effortlessly makes me think… maybe it’s time to own a crib here in Paris,” he wrote.
Responding to a fan who asked, “Hope they can speak Igbo, too?” Okoye replied, “And who naija language help? Make I hear word abeg.”
The comment sparked criticism on social media, with many accusing the singer of undermining Nigerian languages despite frequently incorporating Igbo, Yoruba, and other indigenous languages into his music and benefiting from their widespread commercial appeal.
