PLATEAU JNI DENIES ESTABLISHMENT OF HISBAH CORPS IN JOS NORTH

The Plateau State chapter of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has dismissed reports alleging that a Muslim organisation established a religious and moral enforcement group operating as the Hisbah Corps in Jos North Local Government Area.
The clarification followed public concern over claims that members of the alleged group had subjected residents to intimidation, harassment, extortion and unauthorised rules and restrictions.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang had earlier rejected the reported establishment of the Hisbah group and directed that its activities be stopped immediately.
He also ordered security agencies to identify and investigate those behind the alleged operations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the JNI State Secretary, Dr Salim Musa Umar, said the organisation was not aware of any Islamic group planning to establish a Hisbah Corps anywhere in Plateau State.
Umar explained that the controversy was largely driven by social media posts, including images allegedly generated with artificial intelligence to create the impression that a Hisbah organisation had been formed in Jos North.
He stressed that no Islamic organisation in the state had announced plans to establish such a body, adding that the creation of a Hisbah Corps would require enabling legislation from the Plateau State House of Assembly.
“I want to assure the people that no Islamic organisation in Plateau has come out to say it wants to establish Hisbah. There is nothing like that. It has never been discussed, and it is not part of what is being considered,” Umar said.
He explained that the controversy began after some individuals appeared on social media in uniforms allegedly created using artificial intelligence and claimed that they had established Hisbah in Jos North.
According to him, the posts quickly gained attention as users shared the content across various platforms.
“Hisbah cannot be established without a law from the State House of Assembly, and the government has not done that. Therefore, people cannot simply come out and claim that they have established Hisbah,” he added.
The JNI secretary urged social media users to avoid creating or circulating misleading content that could fuel tension, cause confusion or undermine peaceful coexistence among residents of Plateau State.
