Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a couple and another woman in the Ipaja area of Lagos for allegedly being in unlawful possession of a semi-automatic pistol.

The arrest followed a routine, non-intrusive search conducted by police officers attached to the Ipaja Division, who intercepted the two women and discovered the firearm hidden in their belongings.

Confirming the arrest on Tuesday via his official X handle, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said one of the women later led investigators to her husband, who was identified as the owner of the weapon.

“After a cursory and non-intrusive look at the contents of their bags, this semi-automatic pistol was found in their possession by police officers of Ipaja Division,” Hundeyin stated.

He also noted how the incident could have easily been misinterpreted by the public if not for the officers’ professionalism.

“’See these police officers harassing two ladies, insisting on searching their bags…’ That would have been the narrative,” he wrote.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, as authorities work to uncover the origin of the weapon and the motive for its possession.

The identities of the suspects have not been disclosed at press time. The police assured the public that efforts remain ongoing to rid the state of illegal firearms.

“One less illegal firearm in circulation. #LagosPoliceNG is your friend!” Hundeyin added.
