POLICE ARREST MAN OVER ALLEGED KILLING OF GIRLFRIEND AFTER HIV DISPUTE

Police in Enugu State have arrested a 30-year-old man, Chibuike Okpara, in connection with the alleged killing of his girlfriend following an argument reportedly centred on HIV infection.
The deceased, identified as Chinyere, was allegedly killed on September 19 at Olympic Layout, One Day Area, Enugu State.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, said the suspect was arrested on September 21 after neighbours reportedly noticed an offensive odour coming from his apartment.
According to Ndukwe, police operatives from the Awkunanaw Division rescued Okpara from an angry mob and arrested him at about 6:30 p.m.

Preliminary investigations, the police said, indicated that Okpara allegedly struck his girlfriend on the head with a pestle during an argument, resulting in her death.
Ndukwe said the suspect allegedly wrapped the deceased’s body in nylon and concealed it inside the toilet of his apartment.
The decomposing remains reportedly began emitting an offensive odour, prompting neighbours to force the apartment door open and apprehend the suspect before the arrival of the police.
The remains were subsequently evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts were underway to identify and contact the deceased’s relatives.
During preliminary interrogation, police said Okpara allegedly confessed to the killing, claiming that the incident occurred after an argument over allegations about who infected the other with HIV.
Ndukwe said the suspect told investigators that he struck the deceased with a pestle during the argument, after which he concealed her remains inside the toilet.
The police stressed that the allegations remain subject to investigation and have not been independently verified.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the suspect is prosecuted if found culpable.
The police also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends about their movements and exercise caution when visiting or spending time with people.
