POLICE CONFISCATE 8900 POUNDS IN IBADAN, ARREST SIX

The police in Oyo have caught six people who were making fake money and found 89 counterfeit 100 euro notes worth 8,900 euros (about N14.15 million) in Ibadan.

A spokesperson for the police command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, shared this information in a statement on Thursday in Ibadan.

Olayinka said the suspects were allegedly linked to the possession, circulation and production of counterfeit euro currency.

He said the arrest happened after a successful patrol by the command‘s operatives on Tuesday around 7:30 p.m.in the Labo-Wesley area.

He explained that during the patrol, the operatives stopped three men who were riding a motorcycle.

He said when they searched the men, they found 89 pieces of fake 100 euro notes, which added up to 8,900 euros.

He mentioned that the reasons each suspect was involved are still being looked into.

Olayinka added that the suspects admitted to the crime during their questioning and helped the officers find where the fake money was bought.

He said a thorough check of the place where the suspects were found led to the recovery of items believed to be used in making the counterfeit notes.

The police spokesperson also said that three more suspects, including the person thought to be making the fake money, were arrested too.

He said the arrest followed a successful township patrol conducted by operatives of the command on Tuesday at about 7:30 p.m. around Labo-Wesley area.

According to him, the operatives intercepted three men travelling on a motorcycle during the patrol.

“A search conducted on them led to the recovery of 89 pieces of suspected counterfeit 100 euro notes, totalling 8,900 euros.

“The circumstances surrounding the involvement of each suspect are being subjected to further investigation,” he said.

Olayinka said the suspects confessed to the crime during investigation and led operatives to the location where the suspected counterfeit currency was allegedly purchased.

He said a forensic sweep of the premises resulted in the recovery of exhibits suspected to have been used in producing the counterfeit notes.

The police spokesperson added that additional three suspects, including the alleged producer of the counterfeit currency, were also arrested.
