The Senate asked Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, to stop his request for a United Nations-led investigation into the kidnapping and rescue of students and teachers in Ogbomoso.

The resolution came after Adams Oshiomhole, a senator from Edo North, prayed during a discussion on a motion that praised President Bola Tinubu, the military, and other security groups for saving the victims after they were held captive for 56 days.

The debate of the substantive motion sponsored by Opeyemi Bamidele, the senate leader, and 108 senators.

On Monday, Makinde asked the UN and international human rights groups to look into the situation around the kidnapping of students and teachers from schools in Oriire LGA on May 15 and how they were later rescued.

“Such scrutiny is not intended to undermine our institutions; rather, it is intended to reinforce confidence, that truth be established, and that every person found to bear responsibility, regardless of office, influence, or affiliation, would be held accountable,” Makinde said.

Oshiomhole described Makinde’s demand for UN investigation as “not statesmanly and politics taken too far”.

The former Edo governor asked the senate to ask Makinde to stop making light of the rescue operation by wanting an international investigation into the situation of the kidnapping and rescue.

Aniekan Bassey, the senator for Akwa Ibom north-east, supported Oshiomhole’s motion.

Barau Jibrin, the deputy senate president, who was leading the meeting, put Oshiomhole’s extra request to a voice vote.

The initial voice vote was inconclusive before Jibrin called for another vote, after which the “ayes” prevailed.

The senate subsequently adopted the additional prayer alongside the substantive motion commending Tinubu, the armed forces and other security agencies for the successful rescue operation.
