A health worker identified as Ojoma Emie was reportedly killed in an attack by suspected herdsmen in Ikobi, Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, on Monday morning.
According to sources, Emie, a father of three and resident of Oloke in Ikobi, was returning from Ugbokpo, where he had gone to purchase medication, when he was ambushed at Ugbobi Junction along the Ikobi-Olegogba route. The area has reportedly become notorious for attacks on travellers by armed assailants.
Residents said the attackers allegedly intercepted him, killed him, and left his body at the scene before fleeing. His remains were later discovered by members of the community.
Confirming the incident, Vice President of the Ikobi Progressive Forum, Dr. Edoh Ofugocho, said residents became concerned after hearing a series of gunshots from the area.
According to him, locals immediately feared the worst because they knew Emie had travelled to Ugbokpo to purchase medicine. Their fears were later confirmed when news of the attack emerged.
Ofugocho described the deceased as a dedicated health worker, husband, and father whose death has left the community devastated.
He lamented the recurring attacks allegedly carried out by suspected herdsmen in the area, noting that residents have repeatedly called for stronger security measures without significant results.
“We are deeply concerned that this route has become a frequent ambush point. People can no longer move freely within their own communities without fear,” he said.
He added that the circumstances surrounding the killing have heightened anxiety among residents, who say they are increasingly vulnerable to violent attacks.
The community leader disclosed that Emie has since been laid to rest and appealed to security agencies and government authorities to take urgent action to protect residents and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
He stressed that the continued violence has left many residents living in fear and uncertainty, calling for a decisive response to restore safety in the area.
