TEACHER IN CUSTODY OVER ALLEGED DEFILEMENT OF 15-YEAR-OLD STUDENT IN LAGOS

A lesson teacher, identified simply as Michael, has been remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre by an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court over the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old student in the Ketu area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the development on Friday, days after reports emerged alleging that some police officers attempted to persuade the victim’s family to withdraw the case.
The victim’s mother, Mrs. Zainab Musa, had accused officers of offering her family ₦200,000 in exchange for dropping the case. However, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, dismissed the allegation as unfounded, maintaining that the investigation was ongoing and that the suspect would face prosecution.
Adebisi said the case was reported at the Ketu Police Station on July 13, with the suspect arrested and taken into custody the same day.
She explained that the planned arraignment was delayed after the suspect reportedly collapsed on July 15 while preparations were underway to take him to court in the presence of the victim and her mother.
According to the police, he was first admitted to the Lagos State Emergency Hospital at Toll Gate before being transferred to Gbagada General Hospital for further treatment.
Providing an update on Friday, Adebisi confirmed that Michael had since been arraigned before the Ogudu Magistrates’ Court and remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.
She added that the case was adjourned until August 24 for hearing.
The suspect is accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting the teenager at a tutorial centre and allegedly threatening her to remain silent.
Following reports of his hospitalisation, the founder of DOHS Cares Foundation, Ololade Ajayi, had urged the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to ensure the suspect was brought to justice and did not evade prosecution.
