Thousands of followers of the Qadiriyya Islamic order from across Nigeria and other countries have converged on Kano for the 76th annual Maukibi, popularly known as the Waliyyai Festival.
Maukibi is an annual religious procession organised by members of the Qadiriyya order in Kano.
The event commenced at the Qadiriyya House in Kabara, with participants marching to the Wali Maigiginya Cemetery along Katsina Road, where the main gathering took place.
The procession was led by Sheikh Qaribullahi Nasiru-Kabara, leader of the Qadiriyya order in West Africa.
Ahead of the event, the Kano State Police Command said it had deployed security measures to ensure a peaceful and successful celebration.
The command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, urged participants and visitors to abide by the law and uphold Kano State’s reputation for hospitality.
Kiyawa also cautioned participants against actions capable of disrupting the event, particularly the possession of dangerous weapons, illicit drug activities and other behaviours considered inconsistent with the state’s cultural values.
He said the expected influx of visitors from within and outside Nigeria made it necessary for everyone to remain peaceful and law-abiding throughout the celebration.
The police spokesperson further urged members of the public to promptly report emergencies and suspicious activities to the authorities.
