TINUBU, APC GOVERNORS TAKE STEPS TO RESOLVE CAMPAIGN LIST CRISIS

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday met behind closed doors with governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja as efforts intensified to resolve the controversy surrounding the party’s 2027 Presidential Campaign Council list.
The meeting formed part of a series of consultations between the President, APC governors and other party leaders aimed at reviewing and adjusting the campaign council structure.
The governors arrived at the President’s office shortly before 4pm after attending a separate National Economic Council meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The consultations, which began on Wednesday, were convened following widespread criticism of the 223-member campaign council list released by the APC on August 23, 2026.
The list had generated controversy over the inclusion of some party leaders facing corruption allegations, as well as claims that key stakeholders were not adequately consulted before its release.
Sources within the party said the meeting, which lasted from about 4pm to 11pm on Wednesday, was inconclusive and resumed on Thursday after the APC’s National Executive Council meeting.
Although the extent of the proposed changes remained unclear, party sources indicated that the initial list had been removed from the APC’s X account, with a revised version expected after Tinubu’s approval.
The controversy prompted the Presidency to clarify that the list was not final and could still be adjusted.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, said the changes would not amount to a wholesale review but would involve adjustments where necessary.
Dare explained that additional subcommittees were yet to be constituted, creating room for more party members and political stakeholders to be incorporated into the campaign structure.
Meanwhile, the APC is also expected to intensify its social intervention programmes ahead of the January 2027 elections as part of efforts to engage Nigerians and address economic hardships.
Under the initial structure, Tinubu was named Chairman of the campaign council, with Shettima and APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, serving as Vice Chairmen I and II. Senator Abdulaziz Yari was appointed Director-General, while Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, was named Secretary.
The expanded structure also featured directorates responsible for finance, education, manufacturing and MSMEs, grassroots mobilisation, digital operations, welfare, labour relations, faith-based mobilisation and other areas.
