President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, on the 20th anniversary of his ascension to the throne, describing him as a respected moral authority, a voice of moderation and a trusted adviser to Nigerian leaders.

In a congratulatory letter personally signed by the President on Monday, Tinubu commended the Sultan’s two decades of leadership, noting that he had preserved and strengthened the historic institution of the Sokoto Caliphate while using it to promote peace, national unity and development.

Tinubu described the monarch as more than a traditional ruler, highlighting his contributions to religious tolerance, national cohesion and leadership across the country.

He particularly praised the Sultan’s roles as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and Co-Chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, noting that his leadership had helped foster understanding between Christians and Muslims.

According to the President, the Sultan has consistently promoted religious harmony, ensuring that Nigeria’s diversity serves as a source of strength rather than division.

Tinubu also acknowledged the monarch’s contributions to peacebuilding efforts in Northern Nigeria and the Sahel, as well as his advocacy for girl-child education, support for farmers and interventions on behalf of vulnerable Nigerians.

Reflecting on their personal relationship, the President expressed appreciation for the Sultan’s friendship, prayers and guidance, describing his counsel as honest, patriotic and consistently guided by Nigeria’s best interests.

He prayed for the monarch’s continued good health, long life and wisdom, expressing hope that his reign would continue to promote peace in Sokoto, national unity and the interests of the Muslim community.

The Sultan ascended the throne on November 2, 2006, becoming the 20th Sultan of Sokoto following the death of his predecessor, Muhammadu Maccido.

Maccido died alongside 95 others when ADC Airlines Flight 053 crashed near the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on October 29, 2006.

Before becoming Sultan, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III had a distinguished military career spanning nearly three decades.

A graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, he was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1974 and served in various command and staff positions, including international peacekeeping missions under the United Nations.

He retired from the military with the rank of Brigadier-General in December 2006.

During his 20-year reign, the Sultan has played prominent roles in peacebuilding efforts involving farmer-herder conflicts, the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East and ethno-religious tensions across the Middle Belt.

He also remains a leading advocate for girl-child education and interfaith dialogue in Nigeria.

The Sokoto Caliphate was established in 1804 by Islamic scholar Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio following a jihad across several Hausa states in present-day Northern Nigeria. Its Sultan remains one of the most influential traditional and religious leaders in the country.
