The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has arrested two Nigerian nationals and other individuals over alleged involvement in illegal voting, fraudulent voter registration and falsely claiming American citizenship to participate in federal elections.

The arrests were announced in a statement on Monday as the department intensified its crackdown on suspected election-related offences.

According to the DOJ, the two Nigerians arrested were identified as 61-year-old Mohammed Omar Hassan and 74-year-old Michael Agah.

The department disclosed that Hassan was charged in the Southern District of Texas with voting as a non-citizen, while Agah was charged in the Western District of North Carolina for allegedly voting as a non-citizen and falsely claiming to be an American citizen to participate in an election.

The DOJ stated that Hassan, a lawful permanent resident of the United States, allegedly voted in the 2022 and 2024 federal elections despite not being an American citizen.

“Nigerian national Mohammed Omar Hassan, 61, a lawful permanent resident, has been charged with voting by an alien. Hassan allegedly voted in the 2022 and 2024 elections,” the statement said.

The department also accused Agah, who is equally a lawful permanent resident, of voting illegally and making a false declaration of American citizenship.

According to the DOJ, Agah allegedly claimed to be a US citizen on an Authorisation to Vote Form before participating in the November 5, 2024 federal election.

Speaking on the arrests, US Attorney General Todd Blanche described the development as the largest increase in voter fraud-related arrests since President Donald Trump returned to office.
