The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the institution’s 14th Vice-Chancellor following a competitive selection process involving eight candidates.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Adebisi Akande, after the council approved the recommendation of the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board.

Akande said the process for appointing a new Vice-Chancellor began in accordance with the provisions of the University Act ahead of the expiration of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor on November 1, 2026.

He explained that advertisements calling for applications were published in three national newspapers in April 2026, attracting six applicants.

To broaden the pool of candidates, the Governing Council subsequently constituted a Search Team, as required by law, to identify other qualified individuals who had not applied. The effort resulted in two additional applications, bringing the total number of candidates to eight.

According to Akande, the council met with all eight candidates on Tuesday, July 21, and independently assessed and scored them using approved evaluation criteria.

The exercise produced five candidates who were shortlisted, in order of merit, for the final stage of the selection process.

He added that the council nominated two of its members to serve on the Selection Board, while the University Senate elected two representatives to participate in the exercise.

The Joint Council-Senate Selection Board subsequently interviewed the five shortlisted candidates on Wednesday and recommended Olapegba as the most suitable candidate for the position.

Akande described the exercise as rigorous, transparent and highly competitive, noting that the Governing Council unanimously endorsed the board’s recommendation.

“It is my pleasure to present Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the 14th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan. We wish him a successful tenure,” he said.

Olapegba, who currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and is a professor in the Department of Psychology, will succeed the outgoing Vice-Chancellor when the incumbent’s tenure ends on November 1, 2026.
