Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has overtaken Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane to become the leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, according to the latest power rankings published by The Independent.

Yamal’s outstanding performances for Barcelona and Spain have boosted his chances of winning the prestigious individual award, with the ceremony scheduled to hold in London on October 25.

Kane, despite an impressive 2025/26 season with Bayern Munich, ranks second behind the Spanish youngster. Yamal’s contributions to Spain’s World Cup triumph and his strong start to the new campaign have strengthened his position in the race.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele, winner of the previous edition, occupies sixth place, while Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is ranked eighth.

Below are the top five players in The Independent’s 2026 Ballon d’Or power rankings.

1. Lamine Yamal — Barcelona and Spain

Yamal leads the rankings following another exceptional season with Barcelona and his impressive performances for Spain at the World Cup.

The 19-year-old reportedly scored 24 goals and registered 18 assists across all competitions last season, helping Barcelona secure the LaLiga title.

He has maintained his impressive form in the new campaign, scoring eight goals in his first eight appearances.

His international performances have further strengthened his credentials, particularly during Spain’s Nations League clash against England at Wembley, where he scored in a 3-2 victory.

With his club achievements and international success working in his favour, Yamal is regarded as the frontrunner for his maiden Ballon d’Or after finishing second in 2025.

2. Harry Kane — Bayern Munich and England

Kane occupies second place despite an outstanding goal-scoring campaign with Bayern Munich during the 2025/26 season.

The England captain reportedly netted 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions, helping Bayern claim the league and domestic cup double.

He also scored six goals during England’s World Cup campaign as the team recorded its best performance at the tournament since winning the title in 1966.

Despite his remarkable achievements, Yamal’s recent displays for Spain have given the Barcelona forward an advantage in the Ballon d’Or race.

Reacting to the competition, Kane acknowledged that the final decision rests with the voters.

“Of course, now it is out of my hands, it is down to the voters and the people who decide it,” he said.

“The season I had was my best season by far and we’ll have to wait and see.”

3. Kylian Mbappe — Real Madrid and France

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe occupies third position as he continues his quest for a first Ballon d’Or title.

The France international finished the World Cup as the tournament’s leading scorer with 10 goals, surpassing previous records associated with Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi.

His performances at club level have also strengthened his case, with the report crediting him with 42 goals in 44 appearances last season.

Mbappe has carried his scoring form into the new campaign under Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, recording eight goals in his first eight appearances.

Although Real Madrid endured a trophyless season, Mbappe’s individual statistics have kept him firmly among the leading contenders for the award.

4. Rodri — Barcelona and Spain

Spanish midfielder Rodri ranks fourth after playing a pivotal role in Spain’s World Cup triumph.

He was named the tournament’s best player after delivering commanding midfield performances and helping Spain maintain a strong defensive record throughout the competition.

However, his chances of securing a second Ballon d’Or have been affected by limited playing time for Barcelona at the start of the season following his return from injury.

According to the report, Rodri had completed just two full 90-minute appearances in seven matches at the time of publication.

While his World Cup exploits remain a significant advantage, his performances for Barcelona could determine whether he can climb higher in the rankings.

5. Lionel Messi — Inter Miami and Argentina

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi completes the top five following another impressive World Cup campaign with Argentina.

At 39, Messi scored eight goals to help Argentina reach the final, where they were defeated by Spain.

Despite Argentina’s failure to retain the title, his individual performances have kept him in contention for another Ballon d’Or.

His record in the award also strengthens his credentials, having won it eight times, including in 2023 following Argentina’s previous World Cup triumph.

Former England captain David Beckham has also backed Messi for the honour following his contribution to Inter Miami’s success in the Campeones Cup.

However, Messi’s position in the latest rankings reflects the challenge of winning the award again without securing another World Cup title.
