POLICE COMMISSION UNION DECLARES NOTICE OF INDEFINITE STRIKE
By Sumayyah Olapade
The Police Service Commission’s Joint Union Congress has given the commission’s management an indefinite strike notice due to a breach of agreement.
The strike will begin on Monday, August 29, 2022, according to the union.
Mr Adoyi Adoyi, Chairman of the Joint Service Union, PSC chapter, revealed this in an interview on Thursday.
The notice comes amid a dispute between commission employees, the commission’s Chairman, Mr Musiliu Smith, and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, over who should be in charge of recruiting, promoting, and appointing constables and officers.
He stated that the IGP and other police chiefs, in collusion with the PSC chairman, have overruled the PSC’s constitutional duty.
Adoyi went on to say that the IGP has allegedly taken it upon himself to carry out the functions of the PSC in flagrant disregard of the Nigeria constitution, an Appeal Court verdict, and the PSC’s authorities.
“We’re going on an indefinite strike starting Monday, August 29, to demonstrate our dissatisfaction with the way the PSC is being run by the chairman of the commission, and the flagrant disregard for the constitution, the court of law, and the PSC by the IGO, Usman Baba,” Adoyi said.
“The PSC’s duties are spelled out in the constitution, but the IGP has ignored all of that and taken over the commission’s duties.” In contrast to what is stated in the constitution, he appoints and promotes at his discretion.
“According to the constitution, the appointment, promotion, and recruitment of police officers and constables are the prerogative of the PSC, not the IGP.”
