As tensions build in the wake of the extremist group’s unexpected attack on Israel, the US Treasury on Wednesday imposed penalties against ten Hamas members, operatives, and financial facilitators, among them a prominent commander.

According to a statement from the US agency, the new sanctions are aimed at people who are based in Gaza as well as other places like Sudan, Turkey, Algeria, and Qatar.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen declared in a statement that “the United States is taking swift and decisive action to target Hamas’s financiers and facilitators following its brutal and unconscionable massacre of Israeli civilians, including children.”

On October 7, Hamas carried out an unexpected attack within Israel that resulted in 1,400 deaths.

According to Hamas health authorities, almost 3,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza since Israel declared war and launched retaliation strikes.

The restrictions coincide with President Joe Biden’s Wednesday visit to Israel.

“The U.S. Treasury has a long history of effectively disrupting terror finance and we will not hesitate to use our tools against Hamas,” Yellen added.

She said that Washington will “continue to take all steps necessary” to deny Hamas the ability to raise funds for carrying out “atrocities.”

Hamas has already been classified as a terrorist group by the US.

According to the Treasury, it has targeted around a thousand people and organizations so far that are linked to terrorism and the funding of terrorism by the Iranian government and groups, such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
