The news of the death of Sheikh Abdul-Hafeez Abou, the Baba Adini of Lagos, who passed away at the age of 101, was relayed in a statement on Tuesday by the Executive Chairman, Muslim Public Affairs Centre, Disu Kamor.

The statement partly reads, “It is with great sadness and grief that we received the news of the passing of whose death has just been announced.

“MPAC offers deep condolences on the painful loss of the eminent scholar to his honorable  family and the entire Lagos State Muslim community. We mourn the departure of the great scholar and pray that Allah (SWT) have mercy on him.

“We raise our hands in prayers to the Merciful Lord that He accepts him among the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, the righteous, and those are good companions. We also pray to the One and Only God to have mercy on the bereaved family of Shaykh Abou, his community, students, and admirers.

“Without a doubt, this is a great loss for the Ummah and especially for the Muslims of Lagos State, whom he spent decades teaching, guiding, and leading. We belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.”

However, his Janazah prayer was held today around 2 p.m. at Lagos Central Mosque, and he was taken afterwards to Abari Cemetery and laid to rest.

Speaking after the late Baba Adini was laid to rest, the Chief Imam of Lagos Central Mosque and also the son of the late Baba Adini, Alhaji Chief Imam Engr. Sulaimon Oluwatoyin Abou-Nolla said Baba Adini was an embodiment of the holy Quran and a man full of piety.

He added that piety is the foundation and the bedrock of anything we do in life, and that’s one of the things to emulate from Baba’s behavior.

“He is an embodiment of Taqwa (piety), and he is an embodiment of Quran; when you talk about piety, you see it in him. He is a pious man, and he lives according to the instructions of the Quran and the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“These are the ways that we need to emulate, these are things that we need to take away from him, and these are the lessons that we need to take away from him, because piety is the foundation and the bedrock of anything we’re going to do in life.

“We pray that almighty Allah continues to strengthen us, and we pray that almighty Allah grant him Al-Jannah Fridaous, he concluded.

Furthermore, Alhaji, Chief, Lateef Olufemi Okunnu SAN, CON, addressed the reporter after the deceased was laid to rest. He said, “A great religious leader, a believer in Allah, a great Nigerian also, steadfast in his belief in God and the prophet Muhammad. I pray that he will be admitted to Al-Jannah.

Also, when asked about the initiative the central mosque is looking at for the young Muslims, which entails the legacy of the deceased, he added, “Well, the central mosque, as I know as one of the trustees, they have a school which is run by Dr. Jubril Oyekan, which helps the young ones who are out of school to be some of us, to be young persons. So, I think in the area of education, the central mosque of Lagos is trying to do what Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria, which was 100 years old last month, did about 200 years ago in founding Ansarudeen primary school, Alakoro in 1929, and I have the pleasure and pride of being one of the students of Ansarudeen primary school, Alakoro, he said.

In addition, Alhaji Engineer Abdulganiyu Awelenje urged the youths to emulate the life of the late Baba Adini of Lagos, Sheikh Abdul Hafeez Ashamu, adding that no one knows tomorrow and that they should prepare for it.

“I want to talk to you youths now; we don’t know tomorrow; you are going there; make sure you prepare for it. Because tomorrow is beautiful if you prepare your today, and you all will be there. You shall be there, and we are praying for you to be there in peace and not in pieces, with love, and let the world know you’re doing your part, he stated.
