The Department of State Services and the Nigeria Customs Service have announced intentions to strengthen their cooperative security operations to fight cross-border crimes, with a focus on smugglers and other illicit activity.

The DSS State Director, Mr. Rasheed Adelakun, and the Controller of the Oyo/Osun Area Command, Joseph Adelaja, met in the DSS state headquarters in Ibadan, Oyo State, on March 6, 2025, and made this decision.

A statement released by the NCS and posted on its official Twitter account on Monday included the announcement.

With smuggling networks using increasingly complex strategies, Adelaja emphasized the significance of enhancing intelligence sharing and interagency cooperation.

“Smugglers are evolving in their operations, and to effectively tackle them, we must also advance our strategies. Intelligence sharing and coordinated operations are critical to our success,” he stated.

In order to successfully address security concerns, he reiterated the Oyo/Osun Area Command’s commitment to collaborating closely with the DSS through joint operations, capacity-building initiatives, and real-time information sharing.

Adelakun praised the Customs leadership’s initiative and reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to strengthening cooperation.

“The DSS remains committed to working with the Nigeria Customs Service to protect our borders and safeguard the nation’s economy. Our agencies must stand united against trans-border crimes,” Adelakun said.

In order to enable prompt responses to new security threats, the two agencies hope to strengthen their collaboration through enhanced intelligence exchange, concerted enforcement efforts, and ongoing staff training.
