Pandemonium broke out at Sani Abacha Stadium on Sunday after fans of Kano Pillars F.C. attacked players of Shooting Stars Sports Club shortly after the final whistle.
Shooting Stars players Ismail Adegoke, Mustapha Adams, and Kabir Tijani were reportedly assaulted by enraged home supporters who invaded the pitch moments after the match ended. The players were forced to sprint to the locker room to escape further harm.
According to eyewitnesses, security personnel struggled to contain the violent crowd as medical staff rushed to provide first aid to the injured players.
The ugly incident has sparked outrage among fans and stakeholders, with many calling for swift disciplinary action against Kano Pillars to curb hooliganism in Nigerian football.
Authorities of the Nigeria Premier Football League are expected to review the incident, with possible sanctions looming for the club if found culpable.
