The National Executive Committee, NEC, of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, has appointed Humanitarian Affairs minister, Prof. Nentawe Yiltwada, as National Chairperson of the party.

Yiltwada succeeds Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who stepped down on June 27.

Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, announced the nomination, which was supported by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas.

Yilwatda, who until this point held the position of Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, was promptly inaugurated during the session.

He affirmed the oath of office, committing to “fulfill his responsibilities to the utmost of his capability in alignment with the constitution of the party and the interests, unity, welfare, and advancement of the party as outlined in its manifesto.

Governor Uzodinma further declared that the other newly elected party officials would be inaugurated subsequently by the new chairman at the APC National Secretariat.

In his acceptance remarks, Yilwatda expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, party leaders, and stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him.

He promised to uphold internal democracy and foster unity within the ruling party.

“We will work together with the NEC to build and expand our party. I will ensure healthy internal democracy prevails during my tenure. I will trust and look up to the leadership of the party and all of us to fulfill the dreams that Nigerians have in the APC”, Yilwatda said.

His emergence comes after the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the previous national chairman, who resigned last month citing health-related concerns.

Yilwatda, a technocrat and esteemed party loyalist, was likewise the APC gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 elections in Plateau State.

His ascension to the chairmanship is anticipated to initiate a new phase of reform and consolidation within the party as it prepares for forthcoming electoral contests.

Thursday’s NEC meeting was overseen by President Tinubu and included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Abbas, various APC governors, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, members of the National Working Committee (NWC), and other prominent party stakeholders in attendance.
