Ineos Grenadiers suffered another major setback on Thursday as their top-ranked rider, Carlos Rodriguez, withdrew from the Tour de France with a broken pelvis, following a dramatic crash during the final stretch of Stage 17 in Valence.

“Carlos is in good spirits and remains under the close supervision of our medical team. He will now return home to focus on recovery,” Ineos said.

The 24-year-old Spanish climber, who was sitting 10th overall, was caught in a chaotic mass pile-up on the rain-slicked finish, dashing his hopes of contending for a stage win in the Alps over the next two days particularly on the punishing climbs to Col de la Loze and La Plagne.

Rodriguez’s exit compounds Ineos’s misfortunes, after losing Filippo Ganna to a concussion on Stage 1 in Lille.

Despite the setbacks, the British outfit celebrated a morale-boosting high when Thymen Arensman soloed to victory on the Tourmalet in the Pyrenees last Saturday.

Once a dominant force under the name Team Sky, with seven Tour de France titles between 2012 and 2019, Ineos has struggled to replicate that dominance in recent editions, facing growing pressure to reclaim its former glory.
