INEC CONCLUDES PREPARATIONS FOR AUGUST 16 BY-ELECTIONS, ANNOUNCES RESUMPTION OF VOTER REGISTRATION

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has finalised arrangements for by-elections scheduled to hold in 16 constituencies across 12 states on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday after the commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja.
The elections will cover two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo States, five federal constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States, and nine state constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (2), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara States.
Court-ordered re-run elections will also take place concurrently in the Enugu South I State Constituency of Enugu State and the Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency of Kano State.
Olumekun said all non-sensitive materials have been delivered to the states, while election technology such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has been configured. Recruitment and training of ad hoc staff, as well as security and logistics arrangements, have also been concluded, with the final batch of sensitive materials set for delivery on Thursday.
The commission reminded political parties and candidates that campaigns end at midnight on Thursday, urging all stakeholders to abide by electoral laws, regulations, and guidelines for a smooth exercise.
In a related development, INEC announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will resume, with the online pre-registration portal opening on August 18, 2025, and physical registration commencing on August 25, 2025, at the commission’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide.
The CVR will enable citizens to register for the first time, transfer their voter registration within or across states, or replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Olumekun warned against multiple registrations, stressing that it is an offence punishable by law. Only Nigerian citizens aged 18 years and above who have not previously registered are eligible to participate.
He added that the list and locations of registration centres, as well as dedicated phone lines for assistance, will be available on INEC’s website and social media platforms, with an active CVR Locator going live on August 17.
