Tragedy struck on Sunday when a commercial bus belonging to Adamawa Express plunged into the Namnai River in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, happened while the bus was attempting to cross the collapsed Namnai Bridge, which has remained unrepaired for over a year despite repeated promises by successive governments.

A security expert, Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the accident on X, quoted eyewitnesses as saying the bus, en route to Taraba State, lost balance on the broken section of the bridge before tumbling into the river.

“The Namnai Bridge, which collapsed over a year ago, is yet to be rehabilitated despite repeated promises by successive governments to fix it,” Makama wrote.

Residents described the bridge as a “death trap” and lamented that several lives and properties had been lost due to the government’s neglect. “This tragedy shows how urgent the repair of this bridge is,” one resident said.

As of press time, details on the number of passengers on board and possible casualties remained unclear. The Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer, Yahaya Suleiman, could not be reached as calls to his line failed to connect, while a text message sent to him had not been responded to.

Photos attached to Makama’s post showed victims recovered from the river alongside the wreckage of the bus.
