LSMTL’S COLLABORATION : A FORGED HISTORIC PARTNERSHIP TO BOOST CONSTRUCTION SAFETY, INNOVATION IN IKORODU LAGOS
….as LSMTL and LASUSTECH collaborate on academic excellence in averting incessant building collapse across Lagos State
In a significant move aimed at enhanced building safety standards and refined Academic Excellence, the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL)Agency, today signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) as part of a strategic move that bridges the gap between theory (academia) and practice (industry).
Speaking at the auspicious ceremony, held at the LASUSTECH held in Ikorodu, the General Manager of LSMTL, Engr. Olayinka Abdul, emphasized that the strategic collaboration will focus on several key areas, including student Industrial Training and Internships, Joint Research and Development Projects on construction materials, Curriculum Development, as well as Professional capacity building for both institutions.
She said “ the critical nature of the alliance in this MoU is not just a document; it is a commitment to safeguarding the future of Lagos State’s Built Environment. By partnering with LASUSTECH, we are tapping into a wealth of Academic Knowledge and creating a pipeline of highly skilled Engineers and Technicians.”
“Lagos State is a moving at a pace wherefore technology of notable landmarks come to fore. Hence, together, we will innovate, research, and develop new methodologies to ensure that every building in Lagos stands on a foundation of quality and safety, ultimately fulfilling our core mandate of preventing building collapses as an Agency of Government in charge of protecting all materials used for construction projects .” She said
While reiterating on the benefits of the alliance, Engr. Abdul recounted “Students from relevant departments will have direct access to one of the State’s foremost testing facilities for hands-on training and internships, even as it effectively enhances their learning curriculum to reflect current industry standards, challenges, and technologies. , at ensuring that Graduates will be better equipped with practical skills, making them more attractive to employers in the Construction and Engineering sectors. Better still , it proffers ample opportunity for Final Year Projects Students to undertake research projects based on real-world problems and data provided by LSMTL. “
Still speaking the LSMTL General Manager informed that the liaison serves as a Joint Research Project for Academics and students , as well as LSMTL Engineers to collaborate on cutting-edge research towards developing new concrete mixes using local materials, studying soil mechanics specific to Lagos, or creating more efficient testing methodologies using advanced testing equipment and laboratories, which might be too expensive for an Institution to have maintained alone.
She adjured “ Data Sharing with SMTL’s vast repository of test data can also be anonymized through this collaboration for academic research, thus, providing insights into construction trends and material performance in Lagos. Access to Expertise: LSMTL can tap into the academic expertise of LASUSTECH’s professors and researchers to solve complex technical problems and improve their testing standards. · Workforce Development: This partnership serves as a pipeline for training and recruiting future highly skilled engineers and technicians for LSMTL and the broader construction industry in Lagos.
In his address, the Vice- Chancellor LASUSTECH, Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, highlighted the immense benefits for the Academic community, charging that the partnership is expected to yield significant Public benefits, including the development of higher construction standards, innovative building material research specific to the Lagos terrain, and a more robust workforce, all contributing to the overarching goal of enhanced public safety.
He remarked“today marks a pivotal moment for practical, technology-driven education in Lagos. Our students and faculty will gain unparalleled access to real-world industry challenges, state-of-the-art testing facilities, and invaluable practical experience under an existing framework that can lead to the development of new technologies, standards, and best practices that enhance building safety across the State, directly contributing to the Government’s goal of preventing building collapses”
“This collaboration will enrich our curriculum, empower our research with relevant data, and ensure that LASUSTECH produces graduates who are not only employable, but are also immediately capable of contributing to the growth and safety of our state’s critical construction sector!” The Vice – Chancellor recommends
It may be recall a year ago, that the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency, struck a remarkable move of having an additional testing laboratory within the LASUSTECH Ikorodu Campus , to provide easy access for materials testing process from construction sites / projects around Ikorodu axis of Lagos State , even as it serves as citadel of research facility for upcoming Engineering students of the institute.
The highlight of the occasion was the formal commencement of an historic research program with the Management Team of LSMTL and Academic Staff of LASUSTECH in attendance.
