Armed insurgents have reportedly taken the lives of five soldiers and ten villagers, all merchants from Lilo Village located in the Mada District of Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State.

The assault, which transpired on Monday along the Lilo–Gulubba Road, occurred while troops were escorting traders to the Gusau market. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the perpetrators, who had set an ambush, abruptly unleashed gunfire on the convoy.

Representatives from the Lilo community, addressing the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Gusau on Wednesday, characterized the event as a catastrophic setback for the area. They also urged governmental authorities to tackle security and infrastructural issues impacting the community.

“The bandits emerged from concealment and assaulted our convoy. The soldiers valiantly retaliated during a severe exchange of gunfire. Regrettably, five soldiers perished, and ten villagers lost their lives. Some passengers sustained injuries, while others fled into the surrounding bush,” recounted an eyewitness.

The observer further stated that the assailants later withdrew following their own losses.

Meanwhile, leaders from Lilo and adjacent communities have requested immediate assistance from local, state, and federal governments, particularly in the domains of education, healthcare, road development, and security.

Upon inquiry, the Army’s Media Information Officer, Captain David Adewusi, indicated that he was not yet informed about the incident but assured that he would provide further information later.
