The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Engr. Chibuike Azubike, who allegedly paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos,” along with three accomplices, in connection with a planned unlawful installation ceremony.

Police spokesperson DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, in a statement on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, said Azubike, an indigene of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, was arrested alongside Chief Chibuzor Ani, 57; Chief Martins Nwaodika, 65; and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi, 41.

According to the Command, intelligence revealed that the group had concluded plans to unveil a prototype of a purported ₦1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin. Acting swiftly, police operatives sealed the venue to prevent the ceremony from holding and to protect unsuspecting members of the public from being deceived.

The operation involved conventional police operatives, the Eko Strike Force, and other tactical squads deployed to maintain peace and order in the area.

Oluseyi confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja and are being investigated. They will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, warned members of the public to be wary of impostors seeking to exploit cultural and traditional institutions for selfish purposes. He emphasized that such acts are unlawful, undermine public order, and will be met with decisive legal action.
