Former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has advised President Bola Tinubu to overlook demands for the dismissal of Nigeria’s Service Chiefs, referencing their sufficient training and expertise in managing security operations.

Ndume subsequently advocated for a proactive “TEAM strategy”—emphasizing Training, Equipment, Ammunition, and Motivation—to empower the Armed Forces to effectively address terrorism, banditry, and insurgency.

The demand for the dismissal of the Service Chiefs originated from the Dominic Alancha-led Northern Ethnic National Forum, which alleged that they lacked professional competency despite substantial financial support. Ndume dismissed these assertions as baseless and motivated by hidden agendas.

Expressing apprehension regarding the diminished morale among troops, Ndume indicated that a soldier in the army receives approximately N100,000 monthly, accompanied by a daily allowance of N5,000, which he characterized as insufficient. He urged the government to prioritize the well-being of military personnel, underscoring that the present remuneration is inadequate.

In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, Ndume remarked: “Those advocating for the dismissal of the current Service Chiefs have hidden agendas and do not have the best interests of the administration or Nigerians at heart. I reiterate my appeal for a proactive TEAM strategy—Training, Equipment, Ammunition, and Motivation. These initiatives would significantly contribute to combating terrorism, banditry, and insurgency.

“It is uncharitable for any group to accuse the Service Chiefs of professional incompetence. All of them have the requisite training and experience in theatre operations. What they need is adequate ammunition and motivation. The salary of a private soldier in Nigeria is about N100,000 per month, and the daily allowance of N5,000 is unconscionable. People should refrain from making statements that could dampen the morale of our soldiers and officers in the field.”

Ndume also praised the Tinubu administration for preserving ethno-religious balance in the structure of the current security leadership, contrasting it with previous configurations under the former administration.
