The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has defended the legality of its tinted-glass permit policy, following reports that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has dragged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to court over the matter.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the NPF maintained that the issuance of tinted-glass permits is backed by law.

Citing Section 2(3a) of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004, the Police said the IGP or an authorised officer is empowered to grant or approve such permits, provided applicants demonstrate good cause, either on health or security grounds, as stipulated under Section 1(2) of the Act.

According to the Police, the regulation is aimed at crime prevention, particularly in tackling kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, and “one chance” operations.

On the issue of charges, the NPF clarified that the fees attached to permit applications are strictly processing charges to maintain the digital infrastructure used for the service. It further noted that Section 26(e) and (f) of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020 empowers the Force to provide specialised services to the public at a fee.

The statement also highlighted successes recorded through the Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR), which has facilitated the recovery of numerous stolen vehicles nationwide, describing it as a product of modernised police services in line with global best practices.

“The alleged claims by individuals and groups that the tinted permit policy is not legal, transparent and constitutionally valid are not only untrue and misleading but also a calculated attempt to cast aspersions on the image, integrity, and lawful operations of the Force,” the statement read.

While reaffirming the Force’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and the protection of fundamental rights, the IGP assured Nigerians of continued efforts toward ensuring a safer and more secure nation.
