Chelsea were formally accused by the Football Association on Thursday of 74 alleged violations of regulations pertaining to agent payments from 2009 to 2022.

The FA indicated that the accusations primarily pertain to the interval between the 2010/11 and 2015/16 seasons. The Premier League club has until September 19 to provide a response.

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich revolutionized Chelsea’s prospects after acquiring the west London club in 2003. He divested the Blues in May 2022 to a consortium spearheaded by American investor Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital.

Chelsea released a statement affirming that the club was “pleased to confirm that its engagement with the FA regarding issues that were self-reported by the club is now nearing a conclusion. ”

“The club’s ownership group finalized its acquisition of the club on May 30, 2022,” the statement elaborated.

“During a comprehensive due diligence process before the transaction’s finalization, the ownership group recognized potentially deficient financial reporting related to historical transactions and other possible infractions of FA regulations.

“Immediately following the completion of the purchase, the club self-reported these issues to all pertinent regulators, including the FA.”

Chelsea asserted that they had “exhibited unprecedented transparency” and would continue to collaborate with the FA.

In July 2023, Chelsea reached an agreement with European football’s governing body to remit 10 million euros ($11.7 million, £8.6 million) after acknowledging “incomplete financial reporting” during the Abramovich era.

UEFA stated that it had been “proactively” approached with the information by Chelsea’s new ownership group. Abramovich faced sanctions from the British government in March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He has been characterized by ministers as part of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle but has denied financial connections to the Kremlin.

In June of this year, the British government threatened legal action against the former Chelsea owner regarding the frozen £2.5 billion generated from the sale of the club.

Ministers are advocating for the funds to be allocated towards humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, while the oligarch insists they should benefit all victims of the conflict, including those in Russia.
