A 57-year-old sawmiller, Fatai Quadri, who was seen in a viral video assaulting his wife, Rukayat Quadri, has been remanded at the Ijebu-Ode Correctional Centre pending further hearing into the case.

Quadri was arraigned on Monday before the Ijebu-Ode Magistrate Court on charges bordering on assault, domestic violence, intimidation, and breach of peace. The presiding Magistrate, P.O. Odunsi, adjourned the matter until October 17 for hearing on the bail application.

According to the charge sheet, the defendant was accused of unlawfully beating his 50-year-old wife with a stick and fists on September 15 at their residence in Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, causing bodily injuries. He is also facing charges under the Criminal Code of Ogun State and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, 2017.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed his arrest after the video went viral. The spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, said preliminary investigations revealed that the violence stemmed from a marital dispute over alleged infidelity and property transfer.

“The investigation indicated that the suspect had transferred ownership of a 10-room apartment, jointly built with his wife, to another woman, which provoked the violent attack,” Odutola stated. She added that the victim is currently receiving medical treatment.

Reacting to the incident, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, reaffirmed the command’s zero tolerance for domestic violence, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), described the act as “very reprehensible” and stressed that the state government condemned the assault in its entirety. He noted that the case had been transferred to the Gender Unit for prosecution.

Also commenting, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, assured residents that the government would follow up on the case to ensure justice is served, reiterating the administration’s zero tolerance for gender-based violence.
