POLAND TO REOPEN BELARUS BORDER

Poland will resume its border operations with Belarus this week, announced Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Tuesday. The border was closed two weeks ago during military drills led by Russia.

The closure was communicated on September 9, prior to the Zapad-2025 exercises, during which Russian and Belarusian forces simulated conflict with Western nations.

“The end of these manoeuvres reduces, I wouldn’t say eliminates, but reduces the various risks associated with the aggressive attitude of our eastern neighbours,” stated Tusk.

“So, between Wednesday and Thursday at midnight, the border crossings will be opened,” he conveyed during a news briefing.

“If necessary, if tensions or the aggressive behaviour of certain neighbours intensify, we will not hesitate to make the decision to close the border crossings again. But, for now, it seems that these direct reasons have disappeared.”

Immediately prior to the military exercises, Poland also raised issues regarding Russian drones violating its airspace, while allied NATO nations cautioned Moscow against further provocations.

Recently, Poland has also accused Belarus of facilitating the entry of undocumented migrants from outside Europe across its border.

However, the closure, which encompassed rail crossings, also disrupted a vital overland trade route for transporting Chinese merchandise into Europe, raising concerns from Beijing.

During a visit to Warsaw on September 15, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was informed by his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski about the motivations behind the border closure.

Belarus, a former Soviet republic, remains a significant ally of Russia, which utilized Belarusian territory to initiate its offensive against Ukraine in February 2022.
