The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, mandated the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) to assemble a panel of medical professionals to evaluate the health status of the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The court, in the judgment issued by Justice James Omotosho, ruled that the findings from the medical professionals should be submitted to the court within a period of eight days.

The ruling stated that the report would aid the court in determining a request made by Kanu, who is facing a seven-count terrorism charge, to be transferred to the National Hospital in Abuja for appropriate medical care.

Justice Omotosho directed the medical team to visit the medical facility operated by the Department of State Services (DSS) to verify its capability to address Kanu’s health requirements.

He asserted that the committee established by the NMA has the discretion to utilize any hospital within the country to conduct its assessments.

The court specified that the committee should consist of between eight and ten members from the NMA and must include both a cardiologist and a neurologist.

Furthermore, the court ordered that the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital must also be included as a member of the committee.
